"I have nothing to hide, so I'll just talk to the police" is one of the most common — and most costly — assumptions people make. Being innocent does not make talking to police safe. In fact, it is often innocent people who talk themselves into trouble.
Memory is imperfect, questions can be leading, and an honest answer can be taken out of context or contradicted by another witness. You cannot talk your way out of an investigation, but you can absolutely give the State material it will use against you. Politely declining to answer and asking for a lawyer is not a sign of guilt — it is the smart move for anyone, innocent or not.
