Having a simple plan for a police stop can protect both your rights and your case. When those lights come on, pull over safely, stay in the car unless asked to step out, keep your hands where the officer can see them, and stay calm and courteous.
Provide your license and insurance when asked. From there, you are not required to answer questions about where you were, what you did, or what you had to drink — and you do not have to consent to a search of your car. You can decline politely: "Officer, I don't consent to any searches, and I'd like to speak with a lawyer."
Field sobriety tests and roadside breath tests are also generally voluntary. None of this is about being difficult; it is about not handing the State evidence it would otherwise have to prove.
