One of the most important rights you have is also one of the most overlooked: you can refuse a consent search. When an officer asks for permission to search you, your car, or your home, you are allowed to say no.
Declining a search is not an admission of guilt and cannot be used to prove you did something wrong. Police may still search if they have probable cause, a warrant, or another legal exception — but consent is a separate door, and once you open it, you generally cannot close it. Saying, "I don't consent to any searches," preserves your protections and keeps the legal question alive for your attorney to challenge later.
